USA vs. Mexico 2017: Final score 1-1, Americans secure vital point in World Cup qualifying

FINAL SCORE! USA 1-1 Mexico. Great point for the Americans. It's only the third time they've drawn in a World Cup qualifying match at Estadio Azteca. The USMNT is now big favorites to qualify for the World Cup.

90' - Time wasting sub for the Americans. Graham Zusi replaces Christian Pulisic.

89' - Pulisic with a great run and a shot from 20 yards, but he can't get it on target.

88' - A lot of American players appear to be running on E, but they're still defending well. Despite all their possession, Mexico has created nothing of note.

79' - The Americans want some fresh legs up top. Jozy Altidore comes on for Bobby Wood.

77' - Jonathan dos Santos is off, Pineda is on. Last sub for Mexico.

75' - Geoff Cameron cuts off a cross to prevent what would have been a Chicharito tap-in. It would be incredible if this finished 1-1, both teams look shaky at the back.

74' - And now it's the USMNT's turn to hit the woodwork! Michael Bradley gets denied by the post on a half-volley from 30 yards.

71' - Mexico an inch away from a goal! Hector Herrera hits a gorgeous free kick but it hits the crossbar.

64' - Bruce Arena seems concerned about the USMNT's lack of possession. Paul Arriola is off and Darlington Nagbe is on.

56' - Arriola sees yellow for a hard foul to stop a counter attack. Maybe someone should have done that before Mexico's goal.

53' - Javier Aquino is on for Mexico. Marco Fabian, who was hurt earlier, comes off.

49' - The referee is letting a lot go, only calling about every other foul. This is a very physical game and the ref isn't doing anything to reign the players in.

46' - And we're back! No subs for either team at halftime.

HALFTIME - USA 1-1 Mexico. Both teams will feel OK with that half. A draw at Azteca is obviously very good for the Americans. But Mexico will feel like they were the better team, just the victims of a world class finish, and that they'll win with a repeat half.

40' - Fabian and Beasley are both trying to continue. Neither looks great.

36' - Fabian leaves via the injury cart. Shortly afterwards, DaMarcus Beasley go down. Injuries on injuries here.

33' - Another Mexican player goes down hurt. Marco Fabian is in a lot of pain after a challenge with Bobby Wood, and Mexico might have to burn a second sub.

31' - Substitution for Mexico, which you'd guess is injury-related at this point in the game. Gallardo on for Alanis, but he didn't look hurt.

Here's Carlos Vela's goal. Poor defending and goalkeeping here.

23' - GOAL! USA 1-1 Mexico. Carlos Vela gets El Tri on the board at the end of an impressive counter-attack. He cuts in from the right flank and fires a shot in at the near post. Brad Guzan alligator arms it.

20' - Huge break for the US. No one marks Chicharito as Carlos Vela plays him in, but his chip is terrible. He was one-on-one with Guzan and should have done better.

14' - Mexico awake now. Geoff Cameron has to make a tough clearance to stop Chicharito from scoring, then one minute later, Jonathan Dos Santos misses just a foot wide from 25 yards.

13' - If the USMNT doesn't score a second goal, they may come to regret it. Mexico looks a bit shaken up and is allowing the US to have more of the ball in the attacking half than you'd expect, but that won't last long. They'll get back on the front foot eventually.

Here's Bradley's goal. What a beauty.

6' - GOAL! USA 1-0 Mexico! Wow, Michael Bradley scores the goal of his career! He chips Memo Ochoa from 40-plus yards and the Azteca is stunned!

4' - Carlos Salcedo is lucky to not get booked. He connects with an elbow to Bobby Wood and it was a borderline red card. Somehow doesn't even get a yellow.

3' - A tactical note: Omar Gonzalez is playing as the outside right center back, while Geoff Cameron is playing in the middle. Most assumed it would be the opposite. Mexico's wide players might try to exploit his lack of pace down that side.

It's fair to say this rivalry has become more political in the last year.

1' - Kickoff!

Heavy boos for The Star Spangled Banner.

It's anthem time. The crowd is ready.

The match will kick off at 8:30 p.m. ET on FS1 and Univision Deportes. We'll check back in just before kickoff.

Mexico starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Guillermo Ochoa; Oswaldo Alanis, Hector Moreno, Diego Reyes, Carlos Salcedo; Jonathan dos Santos, Hector Herrera; Hirving Lozano, Marco Fabián, Carlos Vela; Javier Hernandez

United States starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Brad Guzan; Tim Ream, Omar Gonzalez, Geoff Cameron; DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, Kellyn Acosta, DeAndre Yedlin; Christian Pulisic, Paul Arriola; Bobby Wood

It's almost time for the USMNT to face Mexico in World Cup qualifying. El Tri comes in firmly in first place in the Hex, while the Americans sit in third, holding off Panama and Honduras for the final spot in Russia 2018. American coach Bruce Arena has made some surprising changes for this match, swapping out his goalkeeper and implementing a three-man defense.
